Is this REALLY a hate crime?
I've been making a few changes to my blog so bear with me. I want to touch on something that me and my co-worker been discussing for the last couple of days. This is some of the article....
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Whitehaven man is behind bars for shooting a man he says mislead him about his gender. Police say Terron Taylor shot Kelvin Denton after an argument about Denton misrepresenting himself as a woman. According to reports, Taylor shot the victim in the neck and nose at the Peppertree Apartments near Graceland.

For the fifth time since 2006, a transgendered woman of color has been shot in the streets of Memphis, Tennessee on May 27. Tiffany Berry was shot and killed in Memphis in 2006, as well as Ebony Whitaker and Duanna Johnson in 2008. Leeneshia Edwards was also shot in 2008, but survived. The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition is urging the swift and aggressive prosecution of Taylor for the crime and I'm sure that they are gonna want it to be listed as a hate crime but is this really a hate crime?

Is it a hate crime? That's a hard one.
I don't think it's a hate crime as much as it is a foolish crime. This man had to have some inkling that it was not a female. It was his own shame that caused him to shoot.

From the information that you presented, I would say it's not a hate crime.
Although, If the transgendered man told this cat ahead time that he was a man, then yes it would be a hate crime.
Otherwise, it's a crime committed by a man who probably has issues around his own sexuality. At some point before sex (if sex took place) he should have realized this was not a woman and bounced.
This is not the first time something like this has happened here. I actually know someone who killed a guy for misrepresenting himself as a woman.
That still doesn't justify taking someone life. You only got 1!
Yes, we only got 1 life and nothing justifies taking another's life EXCEPT self-defense.
